Foreward (to the First Edition) by Gordon Sullivan, General, U.S. Army (Retired)

“...this book is about soldiers and tradition. By illustrating and describing the development of the patches worn throughout the history of America's army, Barry Stein not only helps preserve our history but also focuses a spotlight on those who have worn those patches. He gives well-deserved recognition to our nation's finest men and women who have defended our freedom so unselfishly, and he keeps a vital part of their story alive.

Soldiers are very special. Anyone who takes the time to illustrate why, such as Barry has done with this book, is special too.

... I have come to believe that these symbols are the ties which bind us to our roots. Each is a short history lesson; a primary representation of the legacy to which the soldier who wears that patch belongs. These patches are a constant source of pride, and a method used over time by the leadership of the army to provide the soldiers a way of openly displaying their place in the long line of heroes who came before.

In your journey through these pages, you will get a feel for one facet of our history. May you find it to be a wonderful and rewarding journey. I did.
